2 Thessalonians 2:1-4 – “Now, brethren, concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our gathering together to Him, we ask you, 2 not to be soon shaken in mind or troubled, either by spirit or by word or by letter, as if from us, as though the day of Christ had come. 3 Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition, 4 who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God or that is worshiped, so that he sits as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God.” NKJV
My hesitancy to address some things in blog posts and on Facebook is not a lack of confidence in my understanding but the frequency of angry attackers who fail to hear the ‘conclusion of the whole matter’ and immediately go on the offensive to defend their doctrines. Since the Bible is of ‘no private interpretation’ and it is my firm conviction that every verse must be interpreted in light of every other verse I find that my understanding on some things is in a state of flux and changes over time. The core beliefs I hold do not change and nothing shakes me from Christ and Him crucified is the DOOR to Salvation. That is a rock that does not change.
Many today, as in times past, are declaring that we are living in the END TIMES and I believe we are. There are many theories and beliefs about the COMING OF THE LORD and what will happen, must happen, or can happen and my little devotional is not likely to change many views on that subject so that is not my focus. Rather I ask, “How near are we to the return of Jesus?” Since the Bible gives some things to look for regarding identifying the times and seasons of the End I ask, “Are we there yet?”
In this passage Paul declares emphatically that the coming of Christ and our gathering to Him can be noted by several things:
- THE FALLING AWAY.
The word used in the Greek is (apostasia) from which we get our word ‘apostasy’. I would offer that the condition marking the End Time is to be one in which there is either a significant dereliction of the essential principles of religious truth, a total abandonment of Christianity itself or the entire Christian system of doctrine and faith so polluted and perverted that it is insufficient for Salvation. There will be a marked departure of Christian truths and principles in THE LAST DAYS.
- THE REVEALING OF THE SON OF PERDITION or MAN OF SIN.
Of the many names used to describe this individual or entity is the same as used for the devil himself so there is little question that his existence and ideology is birthed in hell itself. He and his core belief is one of ‘lawlessness’ with regard to the Laws of God and Christianity.
There is to be an exaltation of MAN or Humanism and a departure from FAITH and FIDELITY. There is to be a return to a mentality and philosophy in which there are many roads leading to Salvation in direct conflict and contradiction to the clear teaching of the Bible and our Lord Jesus Christ. So again I ask, “Are we there yet?” I suggest that it would behoove each of us to check our foundational beliefs and reconfirm our commitment to and faith in God, the Bible and the Principles of Salvation. I stand and declare with the apostle Paul in 2 Timothy 1:12, “…for I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to keep that which I have committed to Him until that Day.” I’ve got confidence that God is going to see me through.
May God be with you as you go through this day!
