Without Christianity, Western Culture Dies.

Of course, I need to expound upon that statement, define it, and enumerate my reasons for this assertion.  If you are not a Christian in some form, you may immediately take umbrage to my declaration.  If you are, you still may disavow my contention.  I only ask for a few short moments of your time to attempt to make my case.

I believe that one of the fallacies of the modern attempts to salvage our Republic in America and Freedom in the Western world is that we have attempted to do it politically.   The problem with that approach is it misses the root problem that has plunged us into the morass we are in.  It does not deal with the human heart (soul).   It feeds on the human heart’s greed, avarice, selfishness, prejudice, and pride.   It promotes power, and unrestrained power corrupts.

I offer a quote first published in 2017 by G. Michael Hopf in Those That Remain.   “Hard times create strong men.  Strong men create good times.  Good times create weak men.  And weak men create hard times.”  I believe that capsulizes the modern dilemma, reflects where we are, and gives an understanding of the root problem.

America became prosperous, and in our prosperity, we lost our moral moorings and the founding Christian principles that shaped our Western culture. I believe it is easily proven that civilizations grounded in Christian principles have more freedom than those not. The populace of those cultures also enjoys more universal prosperity.

Those who contend that America was not founded as a Christian nation are forced to ignore the mountains of documentation and influence Christianity has had in shaping America.  In recent history, a concerted effort has been made to divest America of all biblical and Christian influence in the public square and public education.  The fruit of that will be felt for generations.

Winston Churchill said, “Christianity is the worst form of religion except for all the others which have been tried.”   I do not know Mr. Churchill’s faith, but I do know that Christianity has been an integral, essential element in America’s founding and success.

One of the Founding Fathers, Dr. Benjamin Rush, said, “If we were to remove the Bible from public schools, we would be wasting so much time punishing crimes and taking so little pains to prevent them.”   Even famed atheist Richard Dawkins called himself a “Cultural Christian.”   He said, “I call myself a cultural Christian, and I think it would be truly dreadful if we substituted any alternative religion.”

That seems inconsistent with atheism’s mindset, but he recognized that Christianity built the modern world, and for all its imperfections, its successes far outweigh its failures. I am not talking about the imperfections of Christianity but societies.

No other religion, political philosophy, ideology, or societal construct has produced more freedom and prosperity for so many as Christianity.  Christianity espouses freedom of speech, thought, and expression.  It inspires aspiration to better oneself and provides a platform for intersocietal composition.

We can legislate until we are blue in the face and still not change the human heart. We can mandate tolerance and acceptance, criminalize speech and ideologies, and not change the human heart. We can force compliance out of fear of punishment and financial constraint, but we will not change the human heart. We can place our hope in a human savior and fail miserably, as have all societies taking that course.

The only way to truly salvage the American Republic, our Western culture, and the freedoms we have enjoyed for centuries is Christianity.   In a Christian culture, even non-believers benefit from the freedoms espoused and provided by the biblical view of life.   John 1:4 declares, “In Him (Jesus) was life, and the life was the light of men.”

Love cannot be manufactured.  Life-changing love is only found in God; multicultural societies can only exist with any semblance of peace in life-changing love.    I believe that Dr. Benjamin Rush’s defense of the use of the Bible in schools expresses the value of Christianity in society.

He gave five pertinent points:

  • Christianity is the only true and perfect religion, and in proportion, as mankind adopts its principles and obeys its precepts, they will be wise and happy.
  • A better knowledge of this religion can be acquired by reading the Bible than in any other way.
  • The Bible contains more knowledge necessary to man in his present state than any other book in the world.
  • That knowledge is most durable, and religious instruction is most useful when imparted in early life.
  • The Bible, when not read in schools, is seldom read in any subsequent period of life.

We can continue warring with each other, dividing into sects, schisms, groups, camps, and tribes, pursuing salvation through politics, and continuing to decline. The problem is the fruit of the human heart (soul) reflected in attitudes, ideologies, and actions. Without the influence of Christianity and the Bible, America, and our Western culture will devolve into an unlivable state.

Our answer is God!   You can dismiss it and attack me if you choose.  It is my view, and I ask you to examine your heart and consider God, the Bible, and Christianity as alternatives to our present course.

God bless you, and God bless America!
