This will be a continuation of my extended declaration of my purpose in today’s world. As the foundation for my expressions and declarations, I use the Bible. Psalm 127:1-2 – “Unless the LORD builds the house, they labor in vain who build it; unless the LORD guards the city, the watchman keeps awake in vain. 2 It is vain for you to rise up early, to retire late, to eat the bread of painful labors; for He gives to His beloved even in his sleep.” NASB
Too often, we have made the mistake of thinking all we must do is pray with no personal effort to see a change in the federal government. We have allowed the secularization of the idea of Separation of Church and State to censor and silence us when that was never the intent or purpose of the First Amendment.
Psalm 127, usually attributed to Solomon, defines a balanced perspective and affords a foundation for faith and hope in our personal lives, business, and politics. We dare never forget that GOD IS GOD! Much of society today has moved from absolute truth, and many have adopted a mentality and philosophy that there are no absolute rights and no absolute wrongs.
That opens the door to every person being a law unto themselves.
- If we accept the account of Genesis 1 that “In the beginning God…”
- If we believe that God is truly the Creator, then we have a sense of moral accountability to Him.
- If we do not believe that He is the Creator, we have no sense of obligation, accountability, or responsibility to follow His precepts and become laws unto ourselves.
Sadly, that is the attitude of too many in politics, especially those in the Democratic Party hierarchy.
Psalm 127 unveils a powerful truth and revelation that opens the door to a balanced plan and path for politics. It addresses far more than politics, but in defining my purpose and what I believe is my assignment in life, I use it, at this moment, to address the political. Examine it with me, if you will: The writer begins with the powerful word Unless, which illustrates futility and then offers hope: “Unless the LORD builds the house, they labor in vain who build it…”
In the political sense, the House is our system and mode or method of government. It is more than just Congress or the White House; it is the entire political system, from the lowest bureaucrat to the President. Unless the LORD builds that house, our feeble efforts will be in vain or without any substantive result. We may achieve the objectives we believe are vital and impose or implement our policies, but if we do it outside the will and purpose of God, it will not produce lasting benefits. It will become nothing more than an exercise in futility.
He says, “Unless the LORD guards the city, the watchmen keep awake in vain…” In the Amplified Bible, we read Daniel 2:21, “It is He (God) who changes the times and seasons; He removes kings and establishes kings. He gives wisdom to the wise and [greater] knowledge to those who have understanding.”
For those who argue that God is not interested in politics and that Christians should stay out of the political discussion, I would refer you to that passage and many others. God is very interested in the Political House and the Political City and has committed Himself to Build and Guard it if we follow the prescription of 2 Chronicles 7:14, “…and My people, who are called by My Name, humble themselves, and pray and seek (crave, require as necessity) My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear [them] from heaven, and forgive their sin and heal their land.”
We have a three-fold responsibility before God.
- We Are to WATCH and Heed the Warnings of the “Watchmen on the Wall.”
We are to be observant and “Discern the Times” in which we live. Watching is a vital part of the process; if we are unaware, we will not be forearmed in prayer. However, I concur that one of the ministries of the Holy Spirit is to pray through us when we do not know how to pray, and God is also very interested in us being aware. Awareness comes through Observation or Watching! Therefore, be vigilant! Be alert! Be aware! Be discerning!
- We Are to Verbalize Those Things We See and Hear Arming Ourselves with the Word of God.
We must utilize the Armor of God to Pull Down Strongholds and Defeat the enemy. Some might question how that applies to politics, but politics affects life and freedom to preach, teach, testify, and assemble. If we lose our Freedom, we lose the freedom to proclaim the message of Hope in Christ publicly.
- We Must Become Involved.
The Bible declares that “Faith without works is dead being alone.” There comes a time in life when we need to Hear or See what is happening. We must Discern God’s purpose through Prayer and then act.
That brings me to my initial point or purpose in this presentation. My Purpose is to faithfully take my position on the Wall and Watch. What I See, I will Declare, sounding the Alarm when an alarm is required and making a plea when a plea is appropriate. I will use God’s voice to execute my duties of Informing faithfully and forewarning, including politics.
Prayer is a cornerstone of all that I do. I will not just ask others to engage in that warfare but will enter the trenches with them and fight the fight for Faith, Family, and Freedom. The Psalm we have used also says, “It is vain for you to rise early, to retire late, to eat the bread of painful labors; For He gives His to His beloved EVEN IN HIS SLEEP.” I hope you caught that!
We are to Labor, Pray, Watch, and Warn! But if we do not keep everything in the proper perspective, we will be doing all we do in vain. I do not suggest that the Psalmist was suggesting that we disengage from anything political, but that we must make Trusting God the center of all we do.
We approach our battle knowing that God is on the side of Right. God’s providence established the Republic known as the United States of America, and He is the one who built this nation and has guarded her for these 240-plus years.
As America embraced His precepts and followed His moral principles, she flourished and became the Mighty Nation she had become. The decline can be just as rapid and impressive as that rise has been. If we do not want America to become a byword among the nations of the world, we must become a nation and a people who Trust God, Follow His precepts, and learn as individuals to become those who “Watch and Pray” and then as we receive His marching orders Invest and Involve ourselves in the matters before us.
My objective and purpose are to be a Voice of Reason and Hope, always identifying the dangers, sounding the alarm, calling to action, and Pointing to Our True Hope!
I take the words of Alexis de Tocqueville as I quote from Democracy in America, “I sought for the greatness and genius of America in her commodious harbors and her ample rivers—and it was not there…in her fertile fields and boundless forests—and it was not there…in her rich mines and her vast world commerce—and it was not there…in her democratic Congress and her matchless Constitution—and it was not there. Not until I went into the churches of America and heard her pulpits flame with righteousness did, I understand the secret of her genius and power. America is great because she is good, and if America ever ceases to be good, she will cease to be great.” Also, our first President George Washington’s First Inaugural Address on April 30, 1789, “The propitious smiles of Heaven can never be expected on a nation that disregards the eternal rules of order and right, which Heaven itself has ordained.”
My Objective is to be a Voice of Warning, a Voice of Hope, and a Voice of Prayer. I will WATCH carefully, LISTEN intently, PROCLAIM loudly and consistently, PRAY fervently, and LABOR tirelessly for Faith, Family, and Freedom.
We still have a small window of opportunity, but we dare not squander what has been granted to us. America, the Republic, is too important to neglect our duty. If we are Christians, we are citizens of two worlds. While our first allegiance is to the Kingdom of God, we live in the natural world. We must be good stewards of what God has given us and follow His leadership in building, guarding, and laboring.
God bless you, and God bless America! Let’s Pray for America, for Revival, for the Change that God desires and America needs.
