When the word ‘politics’ is used, the reactions are varied. Some of the emotions elicited become insanely violent. Politics has divided families, nations, communities, and even churches. However, politics is a part of life and, to a degree, unavoidable, even for those who seek to avoid it.
If we define politics as does the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, 5th Edition, we would be left woefully devoid of the impact it has on lives. Politics in the 21st Century has become a war zone rather than a civil attempt to provide governance to a free people.
American politics in 2025 seems more about what people hate than what they love. It is more about branding than standing. It is more about preference than overall good. It is more about political parties than pursuing the ideals advanced in the Declaration of Independence.
Politics, like love, is blind! It is out of that blindness that we make decisions that affect not only the present but future generations. America is not perfect, no nation is. Our history is not pristine, but what nation’s is? There is only one perfect government, and as long as humans make the rules and decisions, it will not exist for human beings.
We have devolved to the place, and maybe we were always there, where we are forced to embrace the lesser of two evils or take a truckload of bad to get a wheelbarrow of good. We are asked to compromise our convictions in the name of tolerance. We have adopted a ‘participation trophy’ mentality where bad behavior, laziness, and parasitic behavior are not only accepted but encouraged.
Modern politics has produced more ‘bottom feeders’ than any profession in American history. Is it the craving for and lure of power? Is it greed and graft? Is it the absence of ethics? Is it fear of rejection or retaliation? What has produced this monster? Is there a solution? Is there any hope for our survival as a Free Constitutional Republic?
I have lost friends over my political and religious views. I regret that, but am unable to conscientiously ‘stand down’ and ‘compromise’ my convictions. I will change my opinions but not my convictions unless the Holy Spirit reveals the necessary change through the Word of God.
I have, at times, been very cautious about offending anyone and walked on eggshells while trying to navigate the sensitivity of those who are unable to cope with any disagreement. I never want to be the source of offense, but biblically, I understand that being offended involves a choice on the part of the one who is offended. We take offense rather than simply being offended. I can choose not to allow something the power to offend me.
The battle lines are being drawn in the sand using the ‘Big Beautiful Bill’ as the rally cry for the 2026 mid-term elections. There are distortions on both sides regarding precisely what is provided in that legislation. The attempts to fan the flames of paranoia and fear are disturbing. Even those who carry the name ‘Christian’ are falling prey to the rhetoric and hate.
America, I have said for many years, we cannot fix what is wrong in this great country through politics or the ballot box alone. The real problem is not which party is in power politically, although it is important. The real problem is not who is president, although that is important. The real issue is the condition of the human heart. I do not mean the organ that pumps blood in the body, but what makes us who we are. The heart or the soul is where the problem lies.
I am in my late seventies now and realize that, even if I live another twenty or thirty years and reach the century mark chronologically, I have a short time left to make a difference in my world. The driving passion of my heart is a Free, Civil, Constitutional America, where everyone is recognized as being created equal with certain inalienable rights from God Himself. I am driven to present Jesus to as many people as possible.
I discovered in the late 1960s the peace that comes with full surrender to Jesus and what the promise of an abundant life truly is. I have made many mistakes in my decades on planet earth, but find God to be long-suffering, merciful, loving, and kind. I have learned the value of what we call the ‘Golden Rule.’ I have learned that we do not all have to agree about every detail of life to be able to work together and make our world a better place.
The vitriol of today’s politics and the thin-skinned reactions are moving us dangerously near the abyss of self-destruction. I believe that God is willing to help us if we will acknowledge Him and pursue His precepts and purposes.
I do not pray about sporting events, asking God to help my team win; that would be self-serving and demeaning to God to choose sides in largely unimportant matters. I do pray that He will motivate people to use reason and consider what is right. I begin with me, asking Him to help me see clearly. I believe that if I get Roy Beaird right, that change will affect others positively. I do not desire to hate anyone!
Politics is important because it is a part of life, and life is the most prized possession we have. The most important thing is not getting our candidates across the finish line to the victor’s circle but getting ourselves right with God. If we are right with God, we will get right with other people, even those who hate us.
God bless you and God bless America!
