The fictional novel by John Steinbeck published in 1961, “The Winter of our Discontent” is apropos when considering the incredible display of hypocrisy and projectionism in American politics. His title was taken from the first two lines of William Shakespeare’s ‘Richard III’. Not to get too involved in the story but to use it as a catalyst to address the disgusting political climate in America I address a small sampling of Steinbeck’s novel.
The idea is drawn from the question of what crimes man would commit if he knew he would not get caught? I have asked that of people in religious and secular settings in the past, that question. I asked, “Would you cheat, steal, or betray people to get ahead if you knew you could get away with it?” I was often shocked at the response especially among people who regularly attended church. I’ve had people tell me that their religious life and business lives are separate, and one has no impact on the other. That is terribly wrong. We have A Life, not a Bunch of Lives! I asked one man, “When did you become a cat?”
The idea that everybody is doing it is never a justification for wrong. In today’s politics, it seems that many politicians manage to justify their actions with the mindset of ‘the end justifies the means’ or ‘it is for the greater good.’ Neither is correct when it comes to wrong and unethical practices. Right is right and wrong is never right.
I believe we are in the clutches of serious discontent and experiencing a disastrous disconnect with honesty, ethics, and morality politically. I am sick of the hypocrisy and projectionism in American politics and believe that if we look the other way we will witness and facilitate the destruction of our Republic. You may disagree, but that’s what I see, and it has become glaringly apparent over the past three years. It seems that every year it grows worse and I fear that we may have traveled too far down that path that the public accepts it as normal and we can never recover.
The classical definition of hypocrisy is: “the practice of claiming to have moral standards or beliefs to which one’s own behavior does not conform; pretense.” The usual definition of Projectionism is: “the projecting onto others what you are doing, rather than admitting or dealing with them in yourself.” That is also the trait of a sociopath for they will always accuse another of what they are guilty of themselves.
Who does that sound like in today’s politics? Isn’t that exactly what the Democrats have been doing to President Trump and have done to Republicans for a very long time? It seems that even a hint of potential wrongdoing by a Republican is justification for a no-holds-barred investigation and search for corroborative proof to condemn and convict. However, if that same hint of corruption or blatant corruption by a Democrat is exposed the insistence that there must be a noble explanation demands it not be scrutinized. That is hypocritical and a glaring example of projectionism and sociopathic behavior.
The idea presented by the Leftists and the Media is that the Democrats are noble, righteous, saintly, loving, and caring and the Republicans, especially Trump are the incarnation of Lucifer himself. We endured a multi-year barrage of innuendo and allegations that Trump and the Republicans had colluded with Putin and Russia to steal the election in 2016. The reality that those allegations were based on debunked opposition research bought and paid for by the DNC and the Clinton Campaign, was of no concern to the Left.
We endured hearsay witnesses who for one reason or another had an ax to grind with the President or were devotedly embedded in the Liberal Agenda of the Democratic Party. We recently endured the Impeachment Trial over the allegations that Trump engaged in Quid Pro Quo with Ukraine to dig up something that would stop Joe Biden in the 2020 election. The hypocrisy and projectionism engaged in by the Left is nothing short of jaw-dropping. However, Old Joe is destroying himself with no help from Trump or anyone else. His ineptitude and corruption manage to keep bubbling to the surface.
Constitutionally, it is within the scope of the President’s authority and power to withhold funds from a foreign government to force that government to take action that is beneficial to the United States. The Democrats liked that idea in 2015 when Biden demanded a quid pro quo from the Ukrainian government to fire a prosecutor who was investigating his son. Biden openly admitted that he was going to withhold funds in the tune of $1 Billion if they did not fire the prosecutor. He said, “I looked at them and said: I’m leaving in six hours. If the prosecutor is not fired, you’re not getting the money.” That was okay because it was in the interest of Joe and his family. But when Trump delays funds it is an impeachable offense. Seriously?
We have a Treaty with Ukraine that authorizes and even demands that the President seek their help in uncovering corruption. That is what the president suggested to them and asked that they work with our Attorney General. The funds were delayed, and the Ukrainian president was unaware that the funds were being held up. Obama not only delayed but refused funds in Ukraine’s fight with Russia, but that was okay. However, Trump’s delay and later funding are impeachable. That is the height of hypocrisy and projectionism. They claim he is corrupt when they are the ones engaging in corruption.
Then the Senate trial followed the incredibly partisan vote and process in the House. The Democrat Impeachment managers claimed their case was iron-clad and undeniable. When it became clear that their case was weak, at best, and fallacious at worst, they demanded more witnesses.
Isn’t that a bit odd, if you have an iron-clad case what is the need for additional witnesses? I am quite sure they would have howled to the heavens, had the Republicans agreed and demanded the Biden, his son, Schiff, and numerous others involved in the corruption on the Left be called. The Democrats would have insisted that was unjustified, but on the other hand all of their witnesses were necessary. They accused the Republicans of being partisan while the House Investigation locked Republicans out of the room and denied most of their requests for witnesses. They denied the President the constitutionally provided right to face his accusers and receive exculpatory evidence. How’s that for hypocrisy?
I am fed up with the mess and where the hate, continual projectionism, sociopathic behavior, and hypocrisy is plunging us into a state where violence is the only possible outcome. The Left is denying the economy, painting false pictures of the conditions in America and insisting that our only hope of survival is TOTAL GOVERNMENT CONTROL be placed in their hands. They are virtually blaming President Trump for the Coronavirus and what they can’t blame him for they accuse him of facilitating. If you believe all their allegations, you might want to shop for some oceanfront property in the middle of Arizona or by a Unicorn Ranch with a few flying pigs. I’m sure you will find Alice, the Scarecrow, and the Tin Man walking through the pasture as well.
America, we either use our heads for something other than a body part to hold hair or hats and think or we will enable the planned destruction of our Republic. I cannot and will not do willingly and complacently watch America destroyed!
God bless you and God bless America!
