Patriotism and the Founding Fathers…

As I contemplated this blog post, I wondered, “What did the founding fathers think of patriotism?” To fully answer that question, we need to consider some quotes from the founders:

George Washington – “The time is near at hand which must determine whether Americans are to be free men or slaves.”

That is almost prophetic when applied to our current day and age.    As the founders, we are faced with that very choice.  As a natural-born American citizen, a Vietnam veteran, and one who loves the Lord and this country, I choose to be free.   I hope that the majority of Americans and in sufficient numbers in all the key states will allow us to restore the hope of liberty and freedom each November.

Benjamin Franklin – “Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch.  Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote!”

That was a warning shot fired across the bow of every generation by one of the brilliant founders of this great nation.   He, as did the others, realized that the citizenry would have to be involved in their government, or it would run wild and consume them.   We are at a crossroads in this country, and which road is taken depends on what we do in every future Presidential and Congressional election each November.

Thomas Jefferson – “To compel a man to furnish funds for the propagation of ideas he disbelieves and abhors is sinful and tyrannical.”

“My God!  How little do my countrymen know what precious blessings they are in possession of and which no other people on earth enjoy!”

It is profoundly provoking to realize how well they understood the difficulty of keeping the Republic Free!   They believed it to be absolute tyranny for the government to “steal” from the people through legislation, regulation, and over-taxation.

They realized what a gift they were presenting to future generations that God had bestowed on them and this nation.  They worked and fought fervently to establish this nation.  Once established, they produced a constitution and Bill of Rights both were designed to keep the Federal Government small.  The objective was to enable the people to maintain their God-given rights and liberty.

We are in grave danger of losing that today.  I keep asking, “What is your freedom and liberty worth to you?”  “How much is a Free America worth?”  “What are you willing to give or do to keep her free?”

Our vote each November answers those questions to a degree, but beware, we will continue to be faced with a far more involved decision, not of your making.  There are those who would destroy this nation and wipe out certain segments of the population in doing so.  We are truly living in what the Bible has described as “perilous times.”

May God help us and bless America and every legal citizen.

  1. Well described. Bravo!
Inspiring citizens numbed by “comforts” to get involved, is our challenge.
