I believe we are in the condition and situation we find ourselves today in America politically for a number of reasons and a consideration high on the list is the fact that most do not know what the Constitution says and millions do not care. Ignorance about our system of government, constitution, rights, liberties and the founding guidelines only leads to professional politicians, elitist and activist taking over and ‘fundamentally transforming’ the Republic that we were given.
I guess the response to Benjamin Franklin’s declaration when asked what kind of government they had decided upon has been answered. He said, “A Republic if you can keep it.” We can and could but apparently have not and will not and it is largely due to Constitutional ignorance and apathy.
With some of the rulings of the SCOTUS, executive actions or orders by the President and failure to act by Congress suggests they do not know the Constitution either. The U.S. Constitution is incredibly clear on the division of power within the framework of the Federal Government. They anticipated that each branch would valiantly and vigorously defend its rightful place thereby maintaining the balance of power and proper checks and balances. Today we see a blurring of the lines of division and a Congress that has surrendered its place and become powerless and useless. We see an executive branch that has taken upon itself to disregard Article I, Section 1 which clearly states “ALL legislative Powers herein granted shall be vested in a Congress of the United States, which shall consist of a Senate and House of Representatives.” Section 7 declares, “ALL Bills for raising Revenue shall originate in the House of Representatives: but the Senate may propose or concur with Amendments as on other Bills.” This President has written legislation via Executive Fiat and the Supreme Court has rewritten legislation by its rulings. Both are violations of the Constitution but we have a Congress that fails to protest and the SCOTUS has ruled if Congress doesn’t protest it is okay to do so. Isn’t that comforting? When we elected those who are either ignorant of their Constitutional powers and responsibilities we have virtual or literal tyranny.
It seems that Congress, the President and Supreme Court missed Constitution 101 in which the First Amendment was discussed. The part of “free exercise of religion and the government not abridging the freedom of speech” they apparently missed or dismissed. But of course there are those that believe the Constitution is an evolving document and whatever those in power deem it to mean is what it means rather than taking it as written and allowing it to guide our governance.
I am not sufficiently versed in Constitutional Law and am not an attorney to attempt to teach it but I am a citizen who is concerned as to the direction our nation has taken over the past few years or decades. I have read and avail myself to as much information as possible on the Constitution and Bill of Rights because I believe that in knowing I am better prepared to serve my country, protect my rights and help my fellow man. As a Christian I recognize the need to know and rightly interpret the Bible for it is our guide of faith and practice. As a follower of Christ I accept my responsibility to pray for those entrusted with leading this nation. If I know the biblical truths and principles we are to live by and am familiar with the Constitution of these United States I can pray more effectively for the individuals and about the policies advanced. Those that are contrary to the precepts and principles of God’s Word I pray for their demise and pray for the success of those that are in harmony with God’s Word.
Hillsdale College continues to offer FREE courses on the Constitution and I would recommend getting a copy of the Constitution and Bill of Rights and study those documents. If you have the time and interest one of the online courses on the basic understanding of the American Constitution would likely be very beneficial. If we, through ignorance or apathy, allow the rewriting of our laws, rendering meaningless our Constitution and the fundamental transformation of America into something other than the Land of the Free and Home of the Brave we will all pay the price. That price will be more far reaching than those giddy over their perceived victories or anyone can imagine. Those seeking to ‘transform’ America know what each erosion of our founding document accomplishes and so should we.
It is time to awaken from our slumber, become informed and if we are informed we will become involved and then and only then do we have hope of KEEPING THE REPUBLIC. What will your decision be? God bless you and God bless America!
